The chills I felt on the sweltering day a real reminder that many souls perished here and this should be remembered as more than just a period in history.
I sat for some time, needing a moment after getting lost in my imagination. Joe and his mom had left me long ago, but I wasn't ready to just move on so quickly. The chills I felt on the sweltering day a real reminder that many souls perished here and this should be remembered as more than just a period in history.
What if we all used our travel to teach us how to treat one another. Rather than just using it as a snapshot opportunity before moving onto the next Facebook picture, what if we took it to heart. I see so much cruelty mirrored in today's world, but it has taken on new forms. We may not be slaughtering one another in an arena, but we are being vicious with words, intentions and actions.
Every time we pick up a gossip magazine, read unbalanced and vicious news about someone or anonymously attack others in a forum on the internet, we are no better than the Romans who sent slaves to their deaths. We may not see the effects as graphically or as immediately when we do these actions, but we are feeding that same brutal, desire. The desire to be superior. By causing pain to another perhaps we are trying to make ourselves feel better. The sad truth about that is it won't fix us, it just makes us sicker.
I have developed a habit of imagining myself in the place of whomever it is I'm viewing. Whether it's the gladiator in armor, someone in a torture device from the Inquisition, a peasant that worked for a Lord or someone I meet while traveling. I can't help but to close my eyes and envision what their life might have been like and how blessed I am to be where I am today. Being empathetic to others plights is crucial to understanding how disastrous it is to be cruel.
So next time you are tempted to join into a conversation that berates someone you don't know or even someone you do know but don't like, take that moment and pause.
I love you, just as you are, and always will. Be love and share love. Forget everything else the world has taught you, and choose to stop spreading fear.
